Singaporean pianist William Wei began playing the piano at age three, winning his first competition at seven and debuting his solo recital in Beijing at eight. He has performed globally in venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Singapore’s Esplanade, where “his idiomatic reading seemed like a continuation of the recently concluded International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw…which combined lyrical poetry with a strong technical arsenal…Singapore longs for a piano hero, and Wei might just be the answer” (The Straits Times, 2025).
William’s awards include first prizes in the 2nd “Lila” International Music and Arts Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition in New York, the Young Pianist Competition of New Jersey, second prize in the 13th and 14th New York Music Competition for Young Artists, among others.
He received the National Arts Council Singapore’s Gifted Young Musicians Bursary in 2008 to study at the Manhattan School of Music. He studied with Prof. Yang Ming (Central Conservatory of Music, China) and Dr. Robert Blocker (Yale School of Music).
In addition to music, William has pursued calligraphy and other arts, winning a gold award at the 9th World Calligraphy Itinerant Exhibition. He graduated from Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in 2017, and started a Physics degree at New York University in 2020. Composing since youth, William debuted an original medley arrangement at the Teck Ghee National Day Dinner 2024, attended by Singapore Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
